A Market Moving in Two Directions
The United States faces an unusual split in the electric-vehicle market. Sales of new EVs have weakened, yet more public fast-charging equipment continues to appear at shopping centers, travel stops and urban locations. That looks contradictory only if car sales and are assumed to move together every quarter. Charging networks must serve vehicles that are already on the road, and their operators make long-lived decisions about land, electricity connections and hardware. New research indicates that expansion has slowed from last year's fastest pace, not stopped. The industry is moving from a race to build the largest network toward a more demanding competition over whether drivers can depend on it—and whether operators can earn a return.
What Charging Data Actually Shows
researcher Paren counted 4,382 new public DC fast-charging ports across 806 new US stations in the second quarter of 2026. That was below the 4,865 ports installed in the equivalent quarter of 2025, a roughly 10% decline. The first half of 2026 delivered 7,903 ports, compared with 8,532 a year earlier. Those figures complicate any claim that charging is expanding at an accelerating rate. But they also show meaningful construction during a difficult sales cycle. Paren's full-year 2025 study recorded approximately 18,041 newly opened fast-charging ports and an estimated 141 million , each roughly 30% above the prior year. The installed network now has an established customer base to serve.
Bigger Sites, Faster Plugs
The new equipment also differs from what drivers encountered a few years ago. Paren found that approximately 62% of non-Tesla ports installed in the second quarter of 2026 were rated at 250 kilowatts or more, versus 39% a year earlier. Greater does not guarantee that every car charges that quickly: battery chemistry, temperature and the vehicle's charging system still limit actual speed. Operators are also building larger locations to reduce the chance that one occupied or broken connector strands a driver. Tesla added 1,185 ports in the quarter, while Walmart, ChargePoint and Red E each added more than 300. Competition is no longer confined to traditional charging specialists.
The Economics Behind Expansion
Yet equipment quality alone cannot create an attractive business. A charging company pays for land access, installation, electricity, maintenance, software and support long before it knows how frequently motorists will stop. Paren reported national average fast-charger of 15.76% in the second quarter of 2026, broadly consistent with nearby quarters. That stability is encouraging because new capacity has not simply stood idle, but is not a . A site can generate more sessions while still carrying expensive power-demand charges or repair costs. Paren also reported a national average charging price of $0.538 per kilowatt-hour in the quarter. Such averages hide large differences in local electricity and property costs.
Demand Is Not Evenly Distributed
Geography makes the economics even harder. In Paren's second-quarter measurements, California's fast-charger reached 23.1%, while North Dakota registered just 3.1%. High usage in a dense urban market can justify multiple charging ports, whereas a rural highway location may be important for connecting distant destinations despite much lower daily traffic. Network operators therefore face a public-access problem as well as a commercial one. If every company concentrates entirely on the busiest neighborhoods, drivers elsewhere may remain uncertain about longer trips. But building lightly used stations everywhere could undermine the of the network as a whole.
Why Cars and Chargers Behave Differently
Government policy helps explain why vehicle demand and charger construction are not moving in perfect alignment. The US Internal Revenue Service says new, used and commercial clean-vehicle tax credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. That change removed a purchase incentive, while investments in charging sites that were planned earlier could continue through permitting and construction. At the same time, existing EV owners still need to charge their cars regardless of new-vehicle sales. The effect is a lag between the decision to build and the point at which customers use it. It would be misleading, however, to treat charger additions as proof that new EV demand has already recovered.
The Next Competition Is Operational
The industry's next milestone should be measured less by headlines about total plugs and more by the experience of an ordinary driver. Does a charger work on the first attempt? Is the location safe, easy to find and with the vehicle? Does the price make sense, and can the operator afford to keep the station functioning? More powerful hardware and growing networks create a useful foundation, but reliability and financial discipline will determine whether that foundation lasts. The slowdown in EV sales may therefore be a test of the charging industry's maturity rather than a signal that public charging has become unnecessary.
